Sub Ranker

The sub-ranker allows you to automatically rank the single digit of as many words as you like based on the word’s Scrabble Average score.

To do this, first you must define the minimum and maximum Scrabble Averages that correspond for each digit 1 through 9.  For example, words with a Scrabble average of 1.0 are generally poor words, so you might set the digit 1 to apply to a Minimum of 0 and a Maximum of 1.0.  Once each digit is defined, the single digits will be applied to each of the words you want to sub-rank.

Below is an example from start to finish to apply Sub-Ranks to all three letter words in the Word List.

First, click the Sub-Ranker button on the Toolbar.

The Sub-Ranker Window opens. Next you need to choose which Word List Profile you want to apply the sub-ranks to (you can only work with one Word List Profile at a time). Here we will choose the Easy profile.

After selecting the profile, all of the words are displayed in the list on the left.  You can further refine your word set by typing in a filter in the Filter box. In this example, we are only working with 3 letter words, so we will apply the “len=3” filter.

The Word List display the Word, the Scrabble Total score, the Scrabble Average, and the Current ranking for each word.  If you only want to sub-rank words that have not had a sub-rank applied to them yet, you can choose the “Not Sub-Ranked” button below the filter.  This is useful for sub-ranking a new batch of words that were recently imported.

The apply sub-ranks to the selected words, first we need to set up a Sub Rank Profile.  These are saved whenever you save a word list and can be re-used later.  You can create as many Sub Rank Profiles as you need, it makes sense to have different distributions for different word lengths.  Click the New button to create a new profile, and change its name in the textbox below.

Use the checkboxes on the left to enable or disable certain digits (you may only want to use 1 through 5 for shorter words, or however you choose to use them).

The graph on the lower right shows the distribution of Scrabble Averages across each of the words (x-axis) and how many words have that average score (y-axis).  This graph helps when setting up your profile.  First, click on the Max. textbox for the digit 1.

Then click on the chart for the value you want to be the maximum Scrabble Average for “1” words. You can click and drag on the chart until you have found the value you want.  The minimum value for the next digit is automatically filled in with a value 0.001 higher than the previous maximum.  (You can also type in numbers if that is easier).

Do this for each digit until all of the Min. and Max. values are filled in. Then click the Preview button to see what they sub-ranking will look like (this does not change anything in your Word List, it just helps see what the effects will be.

You will see each word’s new ranking in a the New column of the word list. You can also view the distribution of the single digit sub-ranks at the bottom of the list.

If you feel the distributions aren’t what you want, then repeat the process of adjusting the Min and Max values for the Sub Rank Profile until you are happy with them, then click the Apply button. This will overwrite the current rankings with the new Sub-Rankings.

Now the Current column shows the new rankings.

If you want to remove sub-rankings from a set of words, you can set the filter as you need, and click the Revert button, this will remove the single digit from all of the visible words.  For example, words ranked 43 will become 40, 98 will be come 90, etc. You can then re-apply sub-rankings to them as you see fit.
